Answer
Asterisk is a very popular open source
PBX
system that runs on Linux.
In a traditional setup, you would buy:
A Linux server
Some special hardware to connect your server to the telephone company
One or more "lines" of telephone service from the phone company (on a monthly basis)
Either some special phones that connect digitally to your server, or some special adapters to allow "regular" phones to connect to your server
Then you would install Asterisk on your server, configure it, and be good to go!
This is
significantly
cheaper than either (1) Paying for a proprietary PBX system, or (2) buying separate phone lines for all employees.
However,
Gizmo5 can make this even cheaper!
You can take advantage of Gizmo's
Asterisk / PBX Support
to save money on initial hardware needs, as well as re-curring phone company bills!
