What is a PBX?
Solution
PBX is an Acronym. It stands for
"Private Branch eXchange"
.
Many companies have a PBX system. These systems (usually) allow companies to:
Give all of their employees phone extension numbers
Make free phone calls between employees (and sometimes between offices)
Have an automated directory system to look up employees by name
Have an automated voice menu to direct callers to the information that they need (without necessarily needing to talk to a person)
And, of course, PBX's can also allow a large number of people to use a small number of phone lines
In the past, companies have spent enormous sums of money on these systems, but more recently, companies have been able to get more control, and value, by spending less money on
standards based
PBX systems, like
Asterisk
. Many of these new systems use
VoIP
and
SIP
to allow companies to save even more money by routing some (or all) of their phone calls over the internet.
Many companies today are also successfully connecting their PBX systems to the Gizmo5 network, which allows their entire company to:
Make free calls to other VoIP users
Use
Call In
to pay extremely low rates for incoming phone numbers
Use
Call Out
to make very cheap long distance and international calls
Some companies are even using the Gizmo5 software to login to their company PBX. This saves the expense of buying a hardware phone for each employee, while allowing the employee access to an ever-growing list of features, like
call recording
,
sound blasts
, call mapping, and an online call history.
